Among the variety of such varieties, I would like to mention Hercules raspberries, which can yield crops not only on last year's shoots, but also on those grown this summer. The berries of this variety grow large and sweet, and the fruiting is extended in time. Other characteristics of the variety, yield, main advantages and disadvantages, and much more will be described below.
Breeders from the Kokinsky stronghold of the All-Russian Institute of Horticulture and Nursery (VSTISP) are breeding new repair raspberry varieties. But the main developer of new varieties of this berry shrub was I. V Kazakov, on whose account more than 10 varieties of such raspberries were listed in the State Register of Russia.
Raspberry Hercules is one of such repairing berry bushes bred by this scientist. To breed a new variety, Kazakov crossed Ottom Blyz and No. 14-205-4. As a result, the variety obtained from its “parents” took only the best qualities, in particular, the large size of the berries, their excellent taste, high yield and fruiting several times during the season.
Description and main characteristics of the variety
The Hercules variety is repaired in that the berries ripen on the bushes of this raspberry twice a season - for the first time in mid-July on last year's stems, and for the second time - on ripened stems of the summer from the first half of August.
The bushes of this berry perennial are slightly sprawling. The height of the strong and powerful stems is 1.8-1.9 m. They are so strong that they do not bow even under the weight of a ripening crop. Therefore, there is no need to tie up bushes. However, if these bushes are planted in the shade, then the young shoots grow weaker, so they can break under the weight of ripe berries. In this case, such shoots need a garter to the trellises.
Each bush gives no more than 6 shoots with medium leafiness. Foliage - wrinkled, saturated emerald color.
In young shoots, the color of the trunks is richly emerald, and in the stems of the second year, the bark turns purple with a waxy coating. they are also completely covered with thorns, which makes it difficult to care for the bushes and harvest.
Flowers and berries
Flowers are small in size, white, located under the foliage. The ripening berries have a conical shape and a bright red color. The average mass of ripe fruits is 9–11 g, but individual berries can reach a mass of 15 g. Kostyanki are small, well interconnected, so the berries do not crumble even after ripening. Juicy tender flesh has a sour-sweet taste and a rich smell characteristic of raspberries. Tasting evaluation of fruits - 4.0 points out of 5. Presentation of ripe berries - excellent.
This berry shrub is highly resistant to frost when pruning most of the shoot.
The resistance of raspberries Hercules to the main diseases of this berry culture is high.
The fruiting zone is located on a third of the stem. Harvest ripe fruits in two stages - first ripen the berries on the shoots of last year (in July), then in August, young shoots begin to bear fruit. A total of 1.4-1.6 kg of berries are harvested from one bush. But if you follow the irrigation regime, apply fertilizers on time, then you can collect 2-2.1 kg of ripe berries from each plant.
Harvested crops are best transported in small containers. so that ripe berries do not crumple during transportation. In this case, when transported even over long distances, the fruits will not lose their presentation and taste, will not be remembered and will not secrete juice.

The main advantages of the Heracles raspberry variety include:
- high productivity;
- berries ripen in two stages - first on biennial shoots, and then on the stems grown in the current season;
- the harvested crop well tolerates transportation at various distances;
- the first fruits can be harvested from seedlings planted in the spring;
- the possibility of growing this variety for the further sale of the crop, because the fruits continue to ripen on the shoots until the onset of cold weather;
- bushes do not require special care;
- Hercules raspberry variety is highly resistant to major diseases that affect other varieties of this berry perennial;
- resistance to cold varieties is different: if the shoots are not pruned for the winter, then frost resistance is average, when pruning stems - high;
- It is possible to grow this raspberry with a minimum of mineral complex.
The disadvantages of the Heracles raspberry variety are not too significant:
- some gardeners believe that the ripe fruits of this variety are too sour, but this is a rather subjective opinion;
- the shoots are strongly studded, so when caring for the plant and harvesting, you have to wear gloves on your hands so as not to get hurt;
- this berry shrub forms too few root shoots, which is not very beneficial for those gardeners who are engaged in the sale of seedlings of this variety;
- often by the beginning of autumn cold weather on the bushes there are many unripe fruits.
Planting and reproduction
It is recommended to plant Hercules raspberry seedlings in open ground in the autumn - in the first and second decades of October, and in the southern regions - in the first decade of November. In this case, in the next season it will be possible to get a high yield from each planted seedling. It is impossible to plant in the beginning of autumn, since plants will get stress at elevated temperatures, as a result, bushes can freeze in the winter.
During spring planting, seedlings need to be planted in the ground before the sap flow begins. In this case, planting pits are prepared in the fall, and in the spring the plants are planted after the cold ends.
Before planting, you need to choose a place for the future raspberry - the site should be well lit by sunlight and be protected from gusts of cold wind. It is best to plant raspberries along fences or walls of buildings. The best raspberry variety Hercules grows and bears fruit on loamy or sandy loamy soils. The soil should be neutral in acidity, loose and sufficiently nutritious. The depth of groundwater should be at least 1.4-1.6 m.
If the soil on the site is too depleted, then under the autumn digging, humus is introduced into it - at least 5 kg per each square of the area. Lime or dolomite flour is also introduced into the strongly acidified soil in the fall.
The diameter of the landing pits is 0.5 m, and the depth is 0.55 m. The distance between adjacent bushes should be 0.8 m, and the row spacing is 1.5 m.
A nutrient substrate (about 1/3) is placed at the bottom of the pits, from which a hill is formed in the center of the pit. A plant is placed on it, the roots of which are spread on the slopes. Then the pit is covered with the remaining soil mixture, which is carefully tamped. Then at least 10 liters of water are added under each bush. The root neck is not buried in the soil, it should be 4.5-5.5 cm above the ground level.
After watering, trunks circles are mulched with peat, the thickness of such a layer should be 4-6 cm.
This shrub propagates by root layers.
Many beginning gardeners, having heard about the unpretentiousness of the variety, think that Hercules after planting can not be looked after at all, but this is not so. This variety requires compliance with the irrigation regime, fertilizing, pruning. Only in this case, this berry shrub will bear fruit abundantly.
Watering this berry shrub is necessary according to the following scheme:
- in the last decade of May;
- once every two weeks in June and July;
- in the first decade of August.
The last, most abundant water-charging irrigation is carried out in October in the process of preparing the bush for winter.
In the aisles, trenches are excavated along rows of 8-10 cm deep at a distance of 35-40 cm from the bushes. They make water. Each bush requires at least 4 buckets of water.
In one place, raspberries can grow up to 12-14 years, then this shrub is transplanted to another place. Transplanting time, as well as planting, is autumn. Usually, old bushes are transferred to a new, prepared place, which are simultaneously divided into several parts, at the same time producing variety propagation.
This berry shrub is trimmed in late October or in the first decade of November. At the same time, two-year-old shoots are cut under the root, which will not bear fruit anymore.
In the event that a too cold winter is expected, it is recommended to completely cut out all the shoots. In this case, the crop will be a single crop on young shoots, but in this case the berries will be larger and the crop larger.
In the spring, all broken, dry and frozen shoots are removed.
Fertilizers and fertilizing
Repairing raspberry varieties are fed three times per season:
- the first is in mid-May. for this, a pound of cow manure is bred in a bucket of water. Under each bush make half a bucket of such a solution;
- in July top dressing is carried out. 50 g of urea, 70 g of potassium sulfate, 250 g of superphosphate, 10 g of boric acid are diluted in a bucket of water. This solution is sprayed with foliage;
- in the last ten days of August or in the first ten days of September a complex mineral fertilizer is added to the trunk circles in the amount specified in the instructions.
Diseases and Pests
Raspberry Hercules has a fairly high immunity, so the bushes of this variety are practically not sick and are not affected by pests.
Having become acquainted with the main characteristics of the Hercules raspberry variety, its advantages and disadvantages, we can say for sure - this berry shrub is suitable not only for cultivation in summer cottages, but also for cultivation on an industrial scale.
