Nemantanthus or hypocirrhae - a goldfish in a house without an aquarium
Every year more and more gardeners give preference to hypocirrhosis. This delicate shrub is beautiful in itself, and during the flowering season it is especially good.
Lip-shaped petals of red-orange or yellow color seem to kiss the world around.
Modern botanists have excluded hypocyte from the classification of plants. Most of its species were attributed to the genus Nematanthus (or nematanthus). The name is derived from the Greek words "dumb" - thread and "antos" - a flower, since the buds on the plant hang on a long and thin peduncle.
Initially, the plant was brought to our latitudes from South America. Due to the growth in hot countries of hypocyte accumulates moisture in its leavesdue to which they became thickened, fleshy.
In length, the leaf plates do not exceed 5 cm, and their shape resembles an oval with a pointed tip. Dark green, closer to the emerald color, even more plays with the rays of light thanks to the dense shiny skin.
The lower surface of the leaves is purple-burgundy.
Stems, depending on the species, can be either creeping about 15 cm long or upright more than half a meter in height.
An unusual-shaped nematanthus flower is pear-shaped with a few centimeters thickening below. They appear from a leathery “capsule” with 5 rigid ribs.
Interesting! The flowers even came up with nicknames: kissing lips or a goldfish.
Types of nematanthus (hypocytes)
Any kind of nematanthus (in the photo below) will become an exquisite decoration of the house. Among them, it is easy to choose both varieties for ampel cultivation, and varieties that successfully bloom in a pot on the windowsill.
Nematanthus riverine (Nematanthus fluminensis)
Lianiform variety of hypocytes with large leaves. Their outer glossy surface is green and the inside is burgundy.
The flowers are distinguished by a rich lemon tint and an open external pharynx with red specks.
Advice! By setting up supports for the creeper in the desired directions, one can curl the riverine nematanthus into an unusual figure.
Nematanthus Fritsch (N. fritchii)
Thin shoots under the weight of long leaves (up to 8 cm) hang almost from the base from the pot. Coloring solid green with barely noticeable pubescence. Pink flowers are funnel-shaped with several petals along the edge.
Nemantanthus ankle (N. longipes)
Paired glossy leaves can grow up to 10 cm. Their main color is green, and the central vein and stem are with a red tint. The flowers are coral with yellow stripes.
Nemanthus vetstein (N. wettsteinii)
Upright stems can grow up to a meter and covered with small waxy leaves. Corollas tubular with a bulge of orange.
Nematanthus monolithic (N. nummularia)
The leaves of ampelous nematantus are compared with coins for a small length of thickened round-shaped plates. They grow on stems covered with villi about half a meter long.
Red-yellow buds appear in the axils of the leaves, and after flowering of the hypocirth, it discards all foliage.
Nemantanthus gregarius (N. gregarius)
Variety gregarius is characterized by creeping shoots. Leaves are small and slightly elongated. The flowers are also miniature, yellow or red.
Flowering continues from spring until the beginning of next winter.
Interesting! It is this type of nematanthus that is most often compared to a goldfish.
Nemantanthus nude (N. glabra)
Hypocirrhitis glabra or glabra (hypocyrta glabra) - a view with straight, slightly hanging stems. They are covered with ellipsoidal leaves (4 cm in length) with a glossy sheen. In the sinuses, leathery buds with 5 ribs first form, from which an orange flower appears. After flowering, the bush remains with a green crown.
Hypocirrhosis of the Tropicana (Nematanthus Tropicana)
Nemanthus Tropicana, unlike other varieties, has large bright flowers. She is loved for plentiful and long flowering.
Hypocyte care will vary slightly depending on the time of year. Summer need more time for frequent watering and spraying. And in winter you will have to find a cool place without drafts with good lighting.
Care after purchase
After buying to adapt to the new microclimate, hypocirrha must be given at least 2 weeks. Keep her better separately from other indoor flowers in the so-called quarantine. This measure prevents infection with pests that could get into the house along with the soil of a new plant.
The need for a transplant depends on the condition of the nematantus and the time of year. In spring, a well-adapted flower is better transplant into fertile soil and cut a little. This stimulates the growth of new lateral shoots and the beginning of flowering.
In winter, it is better to remove the pot in cool and allow to rest in sufficient light, since the plant has already prepared for the dormant phase, and not for active growth.
Hypocyte is characterized by the formation of flowers only on young shoots, so it is regularly pruned, and for the first time this is done a month after purchase to give the desired shape and give an impetus to branching.
Then, as the bush grows, pruning is carried out in the winter before active growth begins. When planning a cool winter you can trim the bush in the fall after dropping all the flowers. It is advisable to shorten the branches by at least a third, and preferably half.
In watering any plant moderation is important. It is recommended to moisten the soil when its top layer dries for a couple of centimeters.
In the summer, this happens quickly, and watering is carried out 3-4 times a week. In spring and autumn, a little less often, and in winter, weekly soil moisture is enough.
Important! It is impossible to allow both complete drying of the substrate, and the fact that the roots constantly "floated" in the water.
The delicate root system of the flower needs soft water, always at room temperature. Cold watering will very soon negatively affect the appearance of the foliage.
An excellent composition for hypocirrhea will be the soil for senpolia (violets). If you prepare the soil yourself, then you have to mix the same amount of leafy earth, sand, humus and peat.
The finished mixture should be decontaminated to prevent the development of pest larvae. Annealing the soil in the oven is suitable (30 minutes).
Another variant - shed with potassium permanganate solution or at least boiling water. Ideally, disinfected soil should be left for 2 weeks at room temperature to restore beneficial microflora.
The need for transplantation of even a young plant arises no more than 1 time in 2 years. Hypocirrhythmia grows slowly, and for a year just does not have time to braid the roots of the entire earthy com.
The pot is selected a maximum of 2 cm wider than the previous one, and at its bottom you need to remember to make holes for draining the water. Before transplantation, hypociritis is watered abundantly, especially along the edges of the pot. This technique will facilitate subsequent extraction of the plant.
A new flowerpot is covered with drainage by a third, and from above - 2 cm of soil. Nemantanthus carefully shake and cover the soil with the center of the new pot. Water and spray the foliage again.
Advice! After transplanting, leave the flower cool (18 ... 20 ° C) and do not water it for 3-4 days.
Hypocirrhythmia loves high humidity and frequent spraying. If the plant is grown on a windowsill, then it is placed on a pallet with a thick layer of wet expanded clay.
The growth process of nematantus does not need to be rushed, replanting it more often. A large volume of the pot will only harm the slowly growing roots, which can even rot. It will not work and see the flowers, because the plant will spend all its forces on the development of the area of the earth coma.
It is best for hypocytes to propagate branches cut in spring, from which cuttings are formed. On the shoot for rooting, 4–5 gaps between the leaves are left.
Having removed the 2 lower pairs of leaves, the stalk is placed in a glass with water. To root, you need an elevated air temperature (about 24 ° C).
Planting in a permanent soil should be with well-developed roots. Home care for a young plant needs careful: Do not overfill or dry the soil, remove from drafts or the scorching sun.
Advice! Varieties with pubescent foliage branch worse than glossy ones. They look more beautiful if you plant several cuttings in one pot.
If seeds have formed after flowering, then you can try to germinate them. To do this, wait for full ripening, when the flower is almost completely dry, collect the seeds and dry them.
In the spring grains are planted in moist soil for seedlings and covered with a film. Seeds will germinate in a few weeks at an air and soil temperature of 25 ° C. It is recommended to water the ground from below by immersion in a tank of water. For this, wide holes are made in advance at the bottom.
The pick is carried out by sprouts with 4 full leaves. While the plants are small, you can plant them several in a single pot for splendor. Flowers are quite capable of dissolving already a year-old nematanthus.
Despite the thickness of the leaves, they are very delicate and respond to the slightest changes in air temperature. In a room with hypocirrh, drafts are not permissible, jumps in the daily indicators of a thermometer are more than 5 ° C. In summer, the temperature is maintained at 20 ... 25 ° С, and in winter - 17 ... 18 ° С.
For the location of hypocirrhea, a place is selected with bright, but diffused light. Most suitable are windows on the east or west side.
The scorching sun, as on the south window, should not fall on the foliage. An exception can only be the winter period, when the activity of the sun is minimal, and the plant needs additional illumination.
In the same place, you need to direct a conventional lamp to the flower (from a half-meter distance) or install a phytolamp.
Diseases and Pests
In winter, when the flower is kept warm, clusters of dark insects - aphids - may appear on the leaves. Prevent their development can only cool air.
To remove pests when detected early easily with cotton wool and soap-alcohol solution. From industrial preparations, spraying with “Aktara”, “Iskra” or “Fitoverm” is suitable.
From violations of the rules of care, the following problems appear:
- The dropping of all foliage without flowering occurs from the cold and excess moisture in the soil.
- Yellowing of the leaves is observed from the hot sun in summer, low humidity or excess fertilizer.
- From constant lighting, even during the period, the leaves may curl up and turn yellow in places.
- Brown spots appear on the leaves from cold water.
- Excessive spraying contributes to the development of powdery mildew - a gray coating like mold on the entire surface of the plant. I stop spraying, remove the affected shoots, and treat the rest of the flower with an antifungal drug.
- A sign of a complex violation of care (lighting, watering, top dressing) is the lack of flowering. There may be no buds on a healthy plant, and if the shoots are not cut in the spring.
Benefit and harm
Every housewife can afford a beautiful nematanthus flower. In addition to beauty, the plant positively affects the room in which it is located:
- cleans the air of harmful substances;
- according to popular superstitions, it attracts luck to its master’s house.
Even studies have been conducted, according to which the nematanthus improves the well-being of people who are with him in the same room.
Nematanthus (hypocirrhosis) is one of the few plants combining the beauty of both leaves and flowers. Therefore, in the presence of free time, growing it at home becomes a great pleasure.
